In my professional legal practice, I focus primarily on issues of industrial and copyright rights, licenses, protection of know-how and trade secrets, unfair competition, IP mediations and procedural representation of clients in these areas of law, including the enforcement of the rights of injured parties and defense in criminal cases.

Advisory and consulting activities

I assist my clients in the areas of copyright, trademarks, patents, utility models, industrial designs (designs), licenses, know-how, trade secrets, unfair competition and franchising, including representation in legal proceedings.

Publishing activities

Through my contributions to professional publications, magazines, and my blog, I strive to contribute to improving the legal environment and raising awareness, especially in the areas of intellectual property protection, know-how, trade secrets, and franchising.

Lecture activity

Through my lecturing activities for small and medium-sized companies, as well as for high school and university students, I try to contribute to improving awareness of intellectual property rights and their use for successful business.

Education and work experience

1988 - 1999

Charles University, ČAK and ÚPV

I graduated from the Faculty of Law of Charles University in Prague in 1988, where I also received a doctorate in law. Since the beginning of 1990, I have been involved in advising start-up entrepreneurs within the Association of Czechoslovak Entrepreneurs. After that, I worked briefly in a consulting firm focused on providing legal and economic services to entrepreneurs and in 1993 I became a commercial lawyer registered with the Chamber of Commercial Lawyers of the Czech Republic. I have been practicing as an attorney since 1996. In 1999, I completed a two-year specialization study in intellectual property rights at the Institute of Industrial Law Education at the Industrial Property Office in Prague. Since 1997, I have also been engaged in publishing and lecturing with a focus on industrial rights and licenses in business, know-how protection and economic competition, while systematically deepening my professional knowledge in this area.

1999 - 2018

Study tours and professional memberships

In 1999, I completed a three-month professional internship in the Federal Republic of Germany for lawyers from Central and Eastern Europe, focused on the application of German law and European Union law. In 1999, I completed a two-year specialization study of intellectual property rights at the Institute of Industrial Law Education at the Industrial Property Office in Prague. In 2002, as part of the ČAK educational program, I participated in a study trip to the Commercial Court in Vienna and the International Court of Arbitration in Vienna. In 2003, I completed a week-long study program in France at the European Court of Human Rights and the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, focusing on the court's decision-making practice and the enforceability of its decisions. In 2003, I participated in a study trip to the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig, focused on the issues of European law in relation to administrative justice. From 2004 to 2012, I worked as an assistant professor at the Department of Law of the Banking Institute of the University of Prague (BIVŠ), where I specialized in the issues of industrial property rights and licenses. From 2005 to 2017, I was a member of the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce in Prague. Since 1999, I have been actively cooperating with the Czech Bar Association, where I worked in the section for EU law, international law and international relations from 1999 to 2008, and in 2005 to 2006, I worked as an expert of the Czech Bar Association in the CCBE Competition Law Committee in Brussels. In 2018, I became a member of the Intellectual Property Section.

2017

JUDr. David KARABEC, sro

In 2017, I initiated the establishment of a family consulting, advisory and educational company JUDr. David KARABEC, sro , in whose activities I participate as an executive and expert guarantor of educational courses. The company operates its own Intellectual Property Protection Training Center, in which we focus on educating employees of small and medium-sized enterprises, colleges, universities and research institutions in the field of copyright and industrial property protection, know-how, trade secrets, licenses and unfair competition.

2019 - 2021

Postgraduate education MPA, LL.M.

In 2019, I completed a two-year specialization Master of Public Administration in Research, Development and Innovation (MPA VVI) and in the same year I became a member of the prestigious Czech Association of Inventors and Innovators. In 2021, I completed postgraduate studies (LL.M.) in alternative dispute resolution (out-of-court dispute resolution, mediation, arbitration), completed specialized mediation and negotiation courses for patent attorneys and became Vice-Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Intellectual Property magazine. In 2022, I became a member of the Legislative Council of the Association of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Tradesmen of the Czech Republic.

2021

IP Mediation Center Prague, registered office:

In 2021, I founded the IP Mediation Center Prague, a registered institute , which actively pursues the possibility of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in the field of intellectual property protection, conducts training of specialized mediators in this area, promotes mediation in the field of science, research and innovation and between small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as gathers knowledge support from WIPO, EUIPO and the Office for the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights in the field of alternative dispute resolution.
